Update from 50 Houses: A Retrofit Research Initiative

22 October 2020, 1:00 pm EDT with Naomi Beal of passivhausMAINE

Maine has the oldest building stock in the United States. Maine also heats predominantly with polluting and expensive heating oil at the highest rate in the country. As a rural state with a cold-weather climate, many Mainers are plagued by cruel choices between buying their medicine, feeding their families and heating their homes. With 550,000 existing residential units and an agreement to reach the Paris Accord Carbon Goals, time is running short to clean up the state’s carbon emissions. passivhausMAINE is committed to gathering data and strategies to develop an iterative approach to reducing the cost and time of deep retrofits of our traditional wooden single family, duplex and “triple deckers” with the same intention and goal-driven approach exemplified by Energiesprong.

Making a Passive House Smart: How and Why?

23 October 2020, 1:00 pm EDT with Matt Bowers of Rochester Passive House Consulting LLC and Bhakti Dave of Auros Group

Rochester’s first Certified Passive House is being converted to a ‘Smart’ building. Since completion in 2016, energy data has been manually collected on monthly basis and indoor air quality has been tracked to verify the performance and identify anomalies. Now, the house is equipped with meters and sensors for real-time continuous measurement and verification. Learn from the team how the technology (meters, sensors and datalogging) combined with dynamic simulation models enable integration of actual operations with building’s theoretical potential performance. This aligns evidence-based performance with design intent to create a whole new monitoring-based commissioning approach.
